Small group cultural tours: Explore the world in good company
Epic Experiences in Spectacular Places with Awesome People
Cultured Travel runs small group cultural tours for people who would rather understand a place than photograph it. Groups run roughly 16-24 travelers. A Cultured Travel Tour director always travels with you and you will have the chance to meet amazing locals, guides, and scholars on our tours. Revel in center-of-it-all boutique lodgings, and in-depth, authentic, personalized itineraries with plenty of free time to absorb it all over a drink at the piazza you walked through earlier.
With Cultured Travel, you can go to Rome, Venice, Egypt, Istanbul, the Galapagos, and beyond. At each destination, history is revealed. Culture comes alive. With our tours, you inhabit the place. You make meaningful connections. You get context and backstory, not checklists and photo ops.
Along the way, the “aha” moments come crashing in, one after another. At a certain point you think, “This is what travel is supposed to be. This is what I needed.”

The authentic, understated beauty of the small group cultural tour
There is so much to say about our proven touring concept, but let’s start with what we’re not.
With the typical tour operator, everything’s on a large scale. Big hotel. Big coach. Big groups of tour participants squeezing through alleyways and museum rooms looking dazed, confused, and distracted (sometimes all three at once).
Tolerable as these excursions can be if you’re a go-with-the-flow type, it’s easy to feel lost on them. Everything feels impersonal. Like you’re in a herd, or been reborn as a lemming.
Two days in, you and your partner become known to the tour operators as “that nice couple from suburban Las Vegas.” Which would be bad enough, but you’re from Nebraska!
You will never experience any of that on a tour led by Cultured Travel.
- Our groups, your group, will always be small enough to fit in one room—a cozy rooftop restaurant with 360-degree views of the city, for example.
- Our guides, scholars, and local collaborators enlighten and involve you. They personalize their presentations – versus rotely pointing at sights as they speak through a malfunctioning headset with the sound going in and out.
- Our authentic, delightful, always-surprising itineraries allow you to fall in love with a place, not just do a selfie with it.

The people make the place
We believe the best way to understand a destination is through the people who know it best.
That might mean exploring Venice with a renowned historian, discovering Türkiye with one of the country’s most respected guides, spotting wildlife in the Galápagos with an extraordinary naturalist, cooking alongside a local chef, or simply sitting down with someone who can show you a side of their home most visitors never see.
We seek out remarkable people and meaningful local connections, then build them into our trips in ways that feel personal, authentic, and impossible to replicate on a typical tour.
Because seeing a place is one thing.
Understanding it is something else entirely.
Dr. Thomas Madden, resident scholar
Professor of History at St. Louis University and author of Venice: A New History and Istanbul: City of Majesty. Thomas travels with the Venice, Rome, and Istanbul departures.
Serif Yenen, licensed guide
Turkish author who (literally) wrote the book on his country, Turkish Odyssey. A documentary producer and Smithsonian lecturer, Serif leads the Istanbul and Turkiye tours.
“My hope is that travelers leave Türkiye having seen much more than its monuments. I want them to understand the layers of civilizations, people, traditions, and everyday life that have shaped this land, and to return home feeling that they have come to know Türkiye rather than simply visited it,” says Serif.
Cornelia Besmer, naturalist guide
Certified as a Naturalist Guide in Galapagos National Park since 2017, Swiss-born Cornelia leads the wildlife and island interpretation on this tour.

Cultured Travel FAQs
What is a Cultured Travel tour like?
A Cultured Travel tour is a travel experience built around learning rather than sightseeing and kept to a group small enough to fit in one room. You travel with roughly 20 other people and get to meet incredible locals. You are not following a raised umbrella through a crowd of forty, and you are not handed a laminated name tag and given three rushed days. You get the history behind the building you are standing in and enough time to ask questions about it.
What are the expectations for a Cultured Travel tour?
A Cultured Travel tour is a trip organized around learning rather than sightseeing, capped at a number of participants small enough to fit in one room. Participants are expected to learn on our tours. Being that the composition of the group within a small group tour is incredibly important, participants are also expected to be a generally awesome people who rarely, if ever, whine or complain. It is expected that participants of our tours are able to roll with the occasional unexpected nature of travel.
How many travelers are in a group?
At Cultured Travel, we aim for approximately 20 people so everyone can fit in one room. A rooftop restaurant with 360-degree views, for example, or a room in an art museum, or on a private yacht, or small coach that can get into the city center to pick you up. This number captures all the energy and diversity of larger groups, but with the intimacy and fellowship that are only possible in smaller groups.
Who leads the trips?
Each trip is lead by a tour director, local guides and partners. They handle all onsite logistics, is always available for guidance, travel advice, and to sort out any travel glitches you may encounter.
Are the trips good for someone traveling alone?
Absolutely. Cultured Travel members often travel solo. The friendly, inclusive nature of our tours makes it easy to make meaningful friendships and connections with like-minded travelers. No one ever feels alone or left out.
