Dark Artwork
of Drake Zappa
Dark artwork that transforms shadow into a language of expression, imagination, and discovery.
Everyone holds a relationship with darkness. For some, it is a place of fear and avoidance; for others, it is a place of curiosity and fascination. The shadows we carry are part of the human experience. By examining darkness openly, we can discover new perspectives, recognize shared experiences, and build more meaningful connections with ourselves and others. I create original art that gives visual form to worlds existing between reality and the unexplored.
Introduction To The Work
I make art that reveals what lies within.
My dark artwork explores the intersection of psychological experience, creative experimentation, and visual storytelling. Through expressive imagery, abstract approaches, and reflective curiosity, I create work that examines the inner realms of emotion, perception, and the subconscious mind.
The creative process exists between instinct and intention, allowing each work to emerge through intuition, discovery, and refinement. Forms, textures, and compositions develop organically as ideas transform through visual investigation, evolving into distinct artistic languages—some representative and some abstract.

Through drawings, paintings, mixed media, and other visual forms, my practice explores a wide range of subjects and themes connected by a fascination with the dark, surreal, and unknown.
Working often with macabre art subjects, I delve into morbid themes of death, mortality, existential concerns, and the unsettling nature of life. My work also examines mental illness, trauma, addiction, and grief as reflections of the complexities of the human condition. Beyond these themes, my work is equally driven by an appreciation for dark aesthetics, horror-inspired imagery, and the strange and uncanny, valuing both their emotional resonance and imaginative possibilities.
Guided by the idea of memento mori, a reminder of mortality and death, my practice utilizes discomfort and dysfunction as catalysts for confronting the hidden aspects of existence, acknowledging what shapes us, and discovering meaning within both the light and shadow side of life.
My artistic philosophy embraces darkness as a foundation for creative inspiration, using it to develop emotionally honest and expressive artwork. Through my work, I seek to examine complex experiences, evoke curiosity, and encourage meaningful engagement with the ideas and themes captured within each piece.

I explore freely, experiment often, and let curiosity lead to creativity.
Working exclusively in a single style can lead to creative stagnation, so I am constantly seeking innovation and artistic growth. Through experimentation and reinvention, I create a diverse range of imagery that draws from different techniques, styles, and artistic philosophies. I often work across mixed media, allowing projects to move freely between traditional and digital processes—a sketch may become a digital painting, a digital work may return to a physical surface, or drawing and painting may merge into a single piece. By keeping an open mind throughout my artistic process, I embrace unexpected possibilities and allow each work to evolve naturally.
I create both original artworks and fine art prints. Every original piece is one of a kind. For selected works, I produce fine art prints, limited-edition print runs, and apparel designs, making my work accessible to collectors who missed the original or are looking for a more accessible way to own it.

Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Dark Artwork?
Dark artwork is a broad category of visual expression that explores themes, imagery, and emotions associated with the macabre, psychological, and surreal. It examines mortality, fear, suffering, transformation, the grotesque, and existential questions through symbolic and emotionally charged imagery drawn from the shadow of the human psyche. Darkness and morbidity may be a common thread, but dark art can also be melancholic, contemplative, mysterious, or beautiful, inviting deeper reflection and interpretation.
What Is This Style Of Art Called?
Although I work across a multitude of styles, the common thematic thread throughout my work can be described as a combination of Dark Expressionism and Dark Surrealism. Expressionism prioritizes subjective emotional experience over objective reality, using distortion, expressive techniques, and psychological undertones to communicate inner landscapes. My work builds upon these principles by emphasizing darkness through shadow, atmosphere, and emotionally tense imagery. Utilizing the unconscious mind, subjects often take on surreal, abstracted, and exaggerated forms which transform their visual impact.
What Draws People To Dark And Macabre Art?
Dark and macabre art speaks to universal human instincts—our curiosity and desire to understand the morbid and the unknown. We are innately drawn to danger, death, and uncertainty because exploring these ideas helps us make sense of our own vulnerability and existence. Dark art creates a safe psychological space where fear, grief, mystery, and awe can be experienced without consequence, inviting deeper reflection on ourselves and the shared complexities of being human.
Do You Sell Originals, Prints, Or Both?
I sell originals and prints. Every original piece is one of a kind and always handmade, signed, and never reproduced. For certain originals I may also release fine art prints of that design or limited edition print runs, so if the original is gone or the price is out of your range, there is still a way to own the artwork. All originals and prints are created, printed, and shipped from me directly.
How Does Commissioning Work?
Commissioning a piece starts on the contact page or one of the “Commission” buttons which will ultimately link to the contact page. You will fill out the form with information describing your vision and any additional instructions. You will then send that information over to me and I will begin bringing your unique idea to life!
